During the month of October, we honor those impacted by breast cancer. You hear about it every day of the year, but in October we would like everyone to take the time to learn more.

This disease is the second leading cause of death for women. Approximately one in eight women will be diagnosed with this disease in her lifetime. Every year, over 40,500 women and 460 men will die as a result of breast cancer.

If you know someone who is battling breast cancer, or if you are battling this disease, you are not fighting alone. There are many organizations that focus on finding a cure, helping people with treatment and spreading the word about the importance of early detection.

If you would like to do your part to help battle this disease, here are a few ways you can help:

Susan G. Komen

This organization began in 1980 when a woman promised her dying sister, Susan, that she would do whatever she could to eliminate breast cancer. This organization stands in Susan’s honor to fight back. All donations are used to fund research, global outreach, community health and advocacy.

National Breast Cancer Foundation

The NBCF is dedicated to providing health education and helping the diagnosed understand and go through the process of the cancer care system. They are avid promoters of early detection by providing free mammograms to those who don’t have the financial means for the screening.

Pink Fund

The Pink Fund was formed to help cancer patients with financial assistance throughout their treatment process. Many patients with breast cancer are often too ill to work and could lose out on their paychecks and even health insurance benefits.  Many Americans live paycheck to paycheck and without much savings. Treatments could be costly and place additional stress on the person suffering from breast cancer.

This is where Pink Fund steps in to encourage breast cancer patients to focus on themselves and their families. They provide short-term financial aid to those going through treatment and recovery.
