Halloween Safety Tips

When the month of October arrives each year, so too comes all the fall traditions we know and love. Whether you’ll be carving a pumpkin or going to a corn maze, it’s time to embrace the season that all gets capped off by Halloween at the end of the month. This holiday is a favorite for kids and adults alike, but there are some important safety concerns to keep in mind when celebrating Halloween.

If you’ll be celebrating Halloween this year, you’ll want to keep some of these safety tips in mind:

Dress To Be Seen

Picking out a costume is half the fun of Halloween. If you’ll be going out at night, you should keep this in mind when planning your outfit. When it gets dark out, you run the risk of being more difficult to see from a motorist’s point of view. Consider picking out a costume with bright colors that will ensure you or your child aren’t in danger of not being seen in the low light conditions. You may even consider incorporating reflective tape into your costume to protect yourself from vehicles.

Plan Your Trick-Or-Treating Route

If you’ll be taking your kids out into the neighborhood for some good old-fashioned trick-or-treating, you should plan ahead. Before you head out, plan out the route you’ll take around the neighborhood. This will help your night go more smoothly when trying to handle your excited children. Make sure there will be sidewalks all along your path so you don’t have to step into the street for too long. If your kids are old enough to go out on their own, make sure they know the route they’re taking and have a cellphone on them at all times.

Staying In? Tidy Up

If you’re planning on staying in and handing out candy to other trick-or-treaters as they come by, you should take a few steps to prepare your home. Consider that children may be walking through your front yard or porch area to get to your front door. If there’s anything laying around that they might trip on, make sure to store it away somewhere before the trick-or-treaters start coming by. This could be items like garden hoses, lawn ornaments, or spare toys laying around. If you do want to give out candy, make sure your home is well lit so that children feel safe coming up to your door. Finally, if you have any pets, make sure to keep them away from the front door. You wouldn’t want them jumping onto any trick-or-treaters at the door.

Tips For Drivers

If you’ll be driving somewhere on Halloween, you’ll want to keep some of these safety tips in mind while you’re on the road. The most obvious tip is to be far more cautious when driving than usual. This is one of the most pedestrian-heavy holidays of the year, so you’ll want to keep a close eye out for anyone walking in the street. When you’re backing out of your driveway, pull out very slowly, you might not be able to see if there’s a trick-or-treater somewhere on your driveway or sidewalk.

Halloween is an exciting time of year for everyone. Between trick-or-treating and all the other spooky festivities, there’s bound to be something for you to celebrate this fall.
