Parking Lot Accidents

Posted on : February 22, 2017

Parking lot accidents are one of the most common kinds of accidents. In packed parking lots like at a mall or grocery store, there is an increased chance these incidents may happen. Sometimes these accidents occur when the owner of the other vehicle isn’t present, leaving you wondering what you should do. If you’re the driver at fault, do not drive away. If a surveillance camera or customer spots you, you can be punished for a hit-and-run.

What you should do is track down the owner of the car. Go into the store and speak to someone at the customer service counter. Inform the employee about the situation and describe the vehicle to them so they can announce it over the store’s loudspeaker. In some cases, finding the owner of the vehicle is not possible. When this happens, you should leave a note with your basic information (name, phone, and brief explanation). Place the note in a secure area of the vehicle. Jot down their license plate number and take a picture of the damage if you have a camera. If the damage was extensive, you should notify the police so they can document the accident and can help you locate the other driver.

If you’re the victim in this type of situation, take photos of the damage. Take thorough notes of what happened and if the other driver is present, get their name, phone, address, insurance company, and driver’s license number. You should also try and get backup. Ask people in the parking lot if they saw anything happen. Head into the store and find out if there is security camera footage that you can review. If you are the witness in all of this, provide assistance. If the offending driver is not present, help the other driver document what occurred and the damage. Give them your contact information in case the police need to speak with you or their insurance agent needs more information.
