Because of their lack of experience and risk-taking factor, teens tend to be irresponsible drivers. Believe it or not, senior drivers can also be adventurous. Vision and hearing eventually weaken with age. It’s harder for older drivers with cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration to see. Older vehicle operators often don’t hear horns and sirens approaching. Seniors have other issues such as losing muscle strength and flexibility, which can make it harder to steer. Mental conditions might also affect their judgment while on the road. Parkinson’s disease, for instance, causes trembling in the hands, arms, legs and jaw, rigidity and postural instability.

Car accidents are the number one cause of death in teenagers. The usual mistakes are: speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, disrespecting school zones, drowsy driving and being distracted by cells, music and chatting with friends. As much as 20% of accidents with teens come from distracted driving, particularly texting while driving.
