Time Magazine Names Pope Francis Person of the Year

Every year, Time magazine chooses one influential person and dubs them Person of the Year. Time magazine then features them on their Person of the Year issue, profiling them and highlighting the influential things they’ve done to impact the events of the year. This tradition began in 1927 and kicked off the issue by choosing Charles Lindbergh as the first ever Person of the Year. This year, Time chose Pope Francis, elected head of the Roman Catholic Church, as its Person of the Year. Other finalists this year included President Barack Obama, Syrian President Bashar Assad, Edward Snowden, and Miley Cyrus.

Since elected to the papacy in March, Pope Francis has been in the headlines constantly. He’s recognized for reshaping the public perception of the Catholic Church after years of criticisms and scandals. Pope Francis is interested in revolutionizing the Church, giving it a new, fresh reputation. The Pope is tackling issues such as family issues. The Catholic Church in general has a reputation of being passionately against marriage equality in regards to the LGBT community, contraception and divorce. Since elected the papacy, Pope Francis has made many bold statements such as, ‘The Lord would redeem even atheists’ and speaking out against capitalism. The boldest statement, though, was said when he said the following: “A person once asked me, in a provocative manner, if I approved of homosexuality. I replied with another question: ‘Tell me, when God looks at a gay person, does he endorse the existence of this person with love, or reject and condemn this person?’ We must always consider the person.”

Pope Francis is also refreshingly humble. Instead of living in the “Pope Suite” of the Vatican, he’s opted instead to live in a more modest apartment at the Vatican. He makes his own meals and asks his fellow Catholics to live as modestly as he does. It’s no wonder Time magazine chose him as Person of the Year –he really does practice what he preaches.
