Year in Review: 2022’s Car Accident Statistics

As we ring in the new year in 2023, now is a good time to look back on the trends in car accident statistics for the last year. In 2022, we saw a return to more normal traffic patterns that had been quite different in 2020 and 2021. This allows us to look at some important patterns in car accident statistics, which can hopefully be used to make our roads safer.

The best way to project forward is to look at historical trends, which is exactly what we’ll be doing in today’s blog. Keep reading to learn more about some of the key car accident statistics for the year 2022.

Decrease in Accident Injuries

Starting the accident trends off with some good news: in Florida, there was a slight decrease in the total number of accidents that resulted in an injury. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there was a drop in accident injuries from 2021 to 2022. In 2022, there were a total of 150,667 accident injuries, down from 163,957 in the year before. This is an encouraging trend to see, as getting in an accident that causes an injury can be devastating.

The States With the Most Accidents

According to an analysis by World Population Review, the top 5 states with the most fatal car accidents were Texas, California, Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. With these states being among the list of the most highly populated states in the country, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they find themselves toward the top of this statistic. With so many people on the roads, it’s just a matter of time before an unfortunate accident occurs.

Total Number of Accidents in Florida Down

While Florida does find itself high on the list of states with the most overall car accidents, another positive trend for the state is that there was a decrease in the total number of car accidents over the last year. According to the same data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were a total of 366,076 accidents in 2022. This is a drop off from the total of 401,540 in 2021. Although Florida is still one of the most accident prone states, it’s encouraging to see some improvements in driver safety.

An Increase in Fatal Accidents

Across the United States, a more troubling trend appeared in 2022. According to a report from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the number of fatal accidents across the country was at a twenty year high in early 2022. There were over 9,500 fatalities stemming from a car accident, which is the highest number of first quarter fatalities since 2002. Despite making progress in some areas, it’s clear that there are still strides to be made in driver safety across the country.
